On Being African-American in the Information Technology Industry

Welcome to The Black CIO

January 7th, 2008 · No Comments

This site was one of my new year’s resolutions.

Being an African-American in the Information Technology industry is a unique experience and I thought it would be interesting to write about it. I can’t say if this site will evolve into something broader, but that was my original motivation.

My main editorial focus will be life in a corporate IT environment, both because that’s what I know and because there are already several black bloggers covering the Internet space in a high-quality way (not that that will stop me from posting about Web issues occasionally.)

If you haven’t noticed, this is just one man’s blog. It’s not a magazine nor an industry association nor the Official Voice of African Americans in IT. That means I may have a view that differs from yours or even from that of the majority of black folk who work in IT. But it’s all good right?

Speaking of views, the author of this blog—that would be me—is an African-American IT professional in my mid-30s. That means I’m not a CIO in real life (yet). I’m more like the iPod-wearing technical wiz who reports to somebody who reports to the CIO. The topics I choose and viewpoints I express will usually reflect my age and career stage. That’s an FYI, not an apology. Fourteen even.

Enough with the pleasantries. Welcome to The Black CIO.
